A Loose Garment

How do you wear life?

Have you ever worn clothes that were too tight?
It’s a constant battle to find comfort — restricted breathing, limited movement, constant fidgeting — all in an attempt to relieve the restraints of clothes that just don’t fit.

What about clothes that are too big?
Swimming in a sea of fabric, being swallowed whole, lost in the abyss of cotton — struggling to keep the pants from falling down to your ankles.

That’s how this past week has felt as I tried to put together a blog post that fit just right.
Struggling to find something not too tight. Not too loose.
And here I am, days later, still trying to find the words to reflect what rang true for me last week.

The message that kept resounding:
Wear life like a loose garment.

Like a cozy sweater — perfectly worn-in, soft, and moving with ease.

I felt what I wanted to write. But there was so much resistance to actually sitting down and putting pen to paper.
It was like squeezing into a shirt two sizes too small, or trying to button jeans I have to suck in just to close. And heaven forbid I glance at a plate of food — that button might pop.
But gosh darn it! I'm going to make it fit!
But... why? Where is this resistance coming from?

Why am I trying to squeeze myself into something that doesn’t fit?
Or maybe, I’m just putting on the wrong outfit for the occasion.

Writing is something I deeply enjoy — more than most activities.
There’s something sacred about releasing my thoughts, watching the words spill out to reflect my internal dialogue and experience. One that brings me so much joy in sharing.
Yet still, I resist.
I fight.
I overthink myself out of doing the thing I love.

And that inner critic?
She’s loud.

“There’s nothing worth writing here.”
“This isn’t insightful enough.”
“Meh, it’s an okay topic...”

But maybe this is the whole point.
Why am I wearing this thing I love like a straitjacket?

Because as I walk my path, I want to be comfortable.
I want freedom.
I want room to breathe.

So when I wear life like a loose garment, I am free — free to move, explore, and experience what’s unfolding without forcing, gripping, or adjusting myself to fit into some unrealistic or hypercritical expectation.

Each morning, when I get ready for the day ahead, I can ask myself:

“How do I want to wear my life today?”
“Do I want to be cozy in something that gives me space?”
“Or am I trying to squeeze into something for the sake of looking polished?”

When I choose the loose garment, life feels different.
I’m present.
I’m at ease.
I’m not focused on escaping discomfort.
I’m not suffering.
I’m not trying to grind my way out of something I created with my own resistance.

I can sit fully in the present moment.
And that is the freedom of a loose garment.
